How lawyers use AI — and why the judgement call stays human

If you want to know how careful to be with AI, watch the most careful profession in the world adopt it. Lawyers get struck off for mistakes. Their words carry liability. And they are using AI anyway — which tells you something about how useful it's become.

In a short conversation on Anthropic's Claude channel, Mark Pike (Legal Counsel at Anthropic) and Anna Gressel (Partner and Global Co-Head of AI at Freshfields, one of the world's biggest law firms) discuss how legal work is changing. One sentence in the description does the heavy lifting: "why the judgement call stays with the lawyer."

The line the lawyers drew

The pattern that emerges is clean enough to borrow wholesale:

Notice it isn't "AI for small stuff, humans for big stuff". A first draft of a big contract is still AI-friendly; a small decision with liability attached still isn't. The dividing line is consequence, not size.

Your business has the same line — have you drawn it?

Every business has its own version of "legal advice" — the moments where a wrong word costs real money or trust. Quoting a price. Confirming a date. Handling a complaint. And every business has its version of document review — the repetitive reading and first-drafting that eats hours nobody has.

Most owners either trust AI with everything (risky) or nothing (wasteful). The lawyers' answer is the sensible middle: hand over the volume, keep the verdicts. It's exactly how we wire our own systems — the AI drafts the reply to an enquiry in seconds, but a human taps approve before a single word reaches a customer. The judgement call stays with you; only the typing doesn't.
