A salesperson with zero coding experience built his own AI email assistant

Of all the AI success stories doing the rounds, this one deserves your attention precisely because it's small. No robot armies, no billion-pound lab. Just a salesperson who was sick of answering emails at midnight.

In a two-minute video from Anthropic's Claude channel, Jared Sires — a go-to-market product manager who started as an account executive with zero coding experience — explains the problem: sales reps drown in administrative work, digging through scattered documentation and answering customer emails late into the night.

His fix: he built CLAFTS ("Claude Drafts"), an AI email assistant that drafts customer replies in his own voice. Not a generic autoresponder — a system trained on how he actually writes, doing the first 80% of every reply so he only does the judgement part.

Three things worth stealing from this story

1. The best automation ideas come from the person doing the job

Nobody in a strategy meeting would have specced CLAFTS. It exists because the person feeling the pain built the painkiller. In your business, the person who knows what to automate isn't a consultant — it's whoever answers the enquiries, chases invoices or writes the same quote email eleven times a week. Ask them what they'd kill first.

2. "In my own voice" is the whole game

Customers can smell a template. The reason this assistant works is that its drafts sound like Jared, not like a robot doing an impression of customer service. Any AI reply system worth having learns your phrasing, your sign-off, the way you actually talk — and then a human still reads it before it sends.

3. The barrier to entry has collapsed

A man with no coding background built a working AI tool for his own workflow. The excuse "we're not a tech company" is now officially retired. The realistic question isn't can a small business have this — it's whether you build it yourself over some weekends or have someone wire it up for you in a fortnight.

The obvious parallel

What Jared built for sales emails is, almost line for line, what we build for lead enquiries: the message arrives, an AI drafts a reply in the owner's voice within a minute, and the owner approves it with one tap — even at midnight, especially at midnight.
