What Spotify's AI setup teaches a business of five people
Spotify runs one of the largest codebases in consumer tech — more than twenty million lines of code. So when their VP of Engineering, Niklas Gustavsson, explains how they use AI day to day, it's tempting to file it under "fine for them, irrelevant for me".
Hold that thought, because the headline from his conversation on Anthropic's Claude channel is strikingly simple: at Spotify, an employee can describe an idea and have Claude build a working prototype in an hour or two. Not a slide deck about the idea. The actual working thing, same afternoon.
The real lesson isn't about size — it's about the cost of trying
In most businesses, ideas die in the gap between "we should…" and "who's going to build that?". When trying something costs a week of someone's time, you only try the safe bets. When trying something costs an hour, you try ten things and keep the two that work.
That's the actual transformation hiding in the Spotify story: the price of experimentation collapsed. And that logic works at any scale:
- "What if enquiries got an instant reply with our brochure attached?" — testable in an afternoon.
- "What if we texted last year's Christmas customers in October?" — an hour, one list, one message.
- "What if the weekly report built itself from the ad account?" — a prototype by Friday.
None of those needed AI five years ago — they needed a developer you didn't have. Now the prototype is nearly free, which means the honest bottleneck has moved to choosing what to try.
The part big companies get right that small ones skip
Notice what Spotify didn't do: fire everyone and let the AI run the shop. The prototypes are built fast, then reviewed, hardened and owned by humans who understand them. Speed on the first draft, judgement on the final product. If you take one operating principle from twenty million lines of code, take that one.
If the experiment you keep postponing is "what if every lead got answered in under a minute?", we've already built and battle-tested that prototype — book a free Lead Leak Audit and see it running.
